Improving Delay Discounting to Decrease Harsh Parenting among Parents Receiving Substance Use Treatment in a Low Resource Community

R34 DA053524

About the Project

Parents in treatment for substance use disorders (SUD) often struggle with using positive parenting approaches. In turn, negative parent-child relationships are a risk factor for perpetuating the intergenerational transmission of addictive disorders. One risk factor linking SUD and harsh parenting is a decision-making style focused on immediate rewards rather than planning for the future (known as delay discounting). This pilot and feasibility study focused on adapting an intervention for parents (mothers and fathers) receiving substance use treatment in a community-based setting to improve decision-making and elongate parenting time horizons in Flint, MI and the surrounding communities.
