Improving Delay Discounting to Decrease Harsh Parenting among Parents Receiving Substance Use Treatment in a Low Resource Community

(R34 DA053524; PI: Felton)

Parents in treatment for substance use disorders (SUD) often struggle with using positive parenting approaches. In turn, negative parent-child relationships are a risk factor for perpetuating the intergenerational transmission of addictive disorders. One risk factor linking SUD and harsh parenting is a decision-making style focused on immediate rewards rather than planning for the future (known as delay discounting). This pilot and feasibility study focuses on adapting an intervention to improve decision-making and elongate parenting time horizons for parents receiving residential treatment for SUD in Flint, MI and the surrounding communities.
